how much can an inker influence the final product?

What you have here is the pencils and published alternate cover for the second issue of The New DCU Batman, with inks by Scott Williams. Williams has been Lee’s inking partner since the early 90s. This is pretty much the standard look for their art going back to when I was a kid.

Next we have the same picture inked by Buz, Mike Mayhew, Stuart Saygar, Tim Vigil, Travis Charest, and Frank Cho.

Each of these gentlemen put a distinct touch, and feel to the art. And God Damn, do I love the Charest piece. Now I am hoping that we get a bevy of top colorists to lend some flavor to them as well.

And JUST because I posted a WW doodle today, a friend had to go and post this AMAZINGGORGEOUSAWESOME Ziraldo picture of her.
For those of you not in Brazil, Ziraldo is one of our national treasure cartoonists, he’s been active for like 5 decades, has won a gazillion awards and every single one of them is deserved.
This is from an art exhibit, “Zeróis” (a pun with the portuguese word for “heroes”), and the seething envy I feel is only eclipsed by the fact that this exhibit was in my city and I only learned about it yesterday.Past closing time. And of course it was the last day.

Best picture of Wonder Woman ever? I think SO!!

hah! i love it.
[wonder woman stands tall in the entire height of the picture, spinning a tire iron in one hand and hefting a tire in the other, with a fucking beautiful pursed-lip smirk. in the background, batman looks shocked by his flat-tired batmobile.]

Awesome Bat-Manga by Ben Jones

By way of example, lets consider a sequence from Bat-Mite Presents: Batman’s Strangest Cases! As a transition from Bat-Mite’s lair to the manga section of the show, we had to come up with a few fake pages of a Japanese Batman comic, based on the old comics by Jiro Kuwata. Legal wouldn’t let us just use scans from the originals, so we had to cobble together some fakes, made to look enough like Jiro Kuwata’s art to be recognizable, but not enough to exact duplicates of the original.

So I spent a couple weeks coming up with these 6 fake pages -“

In order for Bruce Wayne to fund his high-tech covert military campaign against the criminals of Gotham, he must secretly siphon off vast sums of money from Wayne Industries…one must wonder whether it might not be much more effective if he took that money and spent it on developing a strong educational system within the city, setting up training programs for the unemployed, and helping small businesses develop… A city without the infrastructure to provide good education and work opportunities simply feeds Joker’s evil schemes by sustaining the conditions that lead to a large underclass unable to find representation in the city. Batman’s archvillains would have a difficult time carrying out their crimes if they did not have an unlimited number of poor and desperate people to prey upon, people who turn to crime in order to survive and find identity. If Batman spent his time and money supporting a life-giving infrastructure, the crime wave in Gotham might be broken.

This is what I’m SAYING. Ok you rounded up a few criminals with your batarang. What are you doing about institutional inequality that fosters crime, BRUCE.

(via urbanafrofuturism)

Wow, I never thought about that.

reminds me of what my crime narratives professor said about Sherlock Holmes/the specific detective story genre Doyle spawned — how it presents crime as an individual phenomenon, one where the blame always rests solely on the criminal, instead of taking a wider view (some later detective/crime stories/novels resist or complicate this — for example dashell hammett’s red harvest, in which everyone refers to “personville” as poisonville — subtle, right? that’s a detective story but also a gangster story and a lot of gangster stories implicated broader society for setting the rules that gangsters [often immigrants or from relatively recent immigrant families of origins looked down upon at the time, like say Italians] had to break because they weren’t allowed into the more law-abiding avenues to success. one interesting example of this we talked about was the great gatsby read as a gangster novel — gatsby is after all a criminal, a bootlegger, an american but through no initial fault of his own the wrong kind of American to be granted access to the things he wanted which those around him took as their birthright.)

uh. anyway. I love batman but this is totes true.

I will forever remain on team Bruce-Wayne-is-a-jerk, this is fact.

(via triangularisthepie)

I definitely agree that Batman’s budget is a part of Gotham’s problem and not a part of its solution, which is why I really prefer Bat stories which focus on why Bruce is working outside of the system — even if I don’t think his reasons as stated are correct, I like to see that the thought has occurred to him/his writers. A lot of stories set early in Bruce’s career as Batman show how Gotham’s system of law is completely corrupt: that you can’t trust the cops on the street, you can’t trust the higher-ranking police officers who set the policies, you can’t trust the judges, you can’t trust the prison wardens, you can’t trust the prison guards, you can’t trust the doctors, you can’t trust the social services, you can’t trust the lawyers, you can’t trust the politicians — basically, in Gotham, if you have any power whatsoever, you can’t be trusted. So a lot of those stories are about how Bruce gets outside of that system, smashes it, and sets up a puppet government of the only two powerful people he’s found to be trustworthy: Lucius Fox and Jim Gordon. And it would have been three, with Harvey Dent, but Harv turns on him, which is perhaps why Bruce never actually lets Lucius and Jim work on their own and why he never commits to joining them as Bruce Wayne. (Why not Leslie Thompkins? Leslie may simply not be considered powerful enough, as a woman.)

…Which is why the sequel to “we have smashed the system” is so often “we have become the system”, where you have Bruce controlling as much of the city as one man can and using the city’s wealth to train and arm his own little paramilitary force — basically, being the biggest mob boss — instead of accepting that blood-money philanthropy is not a substitute for a stable infrastructure which can support itself and be trusted by its citizens. Because Bruce does pump money into education, vocational rehab, and creating jobs, but just as one guy in a bat suit can’t beat up all of the criminals, one guy in a pinstriped suit can’t be all of Gotham’s government. While Bruce controls most of the money and power, no matter what he does with it, Gotham isn’t going to be a stable democracy.

(As for why Alfred Pennyworth isn’t part of Bruce’s new Gotham rulership? On the one hand, class differences, more pronounced than Jim Gordon’s because Jim is an officer and therefore elevated. But, on the other hand, Alfred is the one who created Batman by raising Bruce to this life and keeping him in it; Alfred is as much (or more) “fuck the police” as any other Gotham vigilante saving Red Hood. Alfred may well believe that the system is incurably corrupt (Bruce does hold out hope for the system, in the forms of Lucius and Jim) and that Batman is the only way to save any part of Gotham at all.)

she asked for some Bruce and Jason…so i hope this works.
because Bruce likes to play cape fort with Jason.
(i can never get links to work right on here *Stomps off*) (it’s fixed)

Guuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuh look at it! Isn’t this just the most precious scene ever? ;3; Jason is as playful as a little kitten and…Bruce reads the paper in his Bat suit, that should be possible in the modern days right? And I like how his big cape is like a hut, after all, it would make a perfect little hiding place. And the toy Jason is holding, it’s perfect XD (I bet it sleeps next to him in bed) and the expression on his face is just adorable. I also like the colour choices, they all work well together with the outstanding colours of the Robin outfit. Thank you so much for this adorable picture!! I love it! <3

cape fort omg! and bruce is all just hangin’ out, being, “yup, i’m a wall in robin’s cape fort, whatever.”
